For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Why did Jesus, God’s Son, die?
It is because your sin and mine offends and separates us from the holy God. His justice must be satisfied.
Eternity itself gives insufficient time to pay such a high price ourselves.
Jesus paid it for us.
Propitiation means He ‘satisfied God’s justice against all our sin fully’. In other words, Jesus paid it all.
His death on the cross was in our place. Being eternal Himself, He satisfied eternal justice in a moment of separation from His Father: ‘My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?’
Moments later, His triumphant cry rang out, ‘It is finished!’
Three days later, He rose from the dead - proving atonement was successfully made for all who believe.
